What ambience did you want to create in your bathroom transformation?
“We wanted to move away from the cold, dramatic contrast of the original scheme (that we chose when we first moved in here 3 years ago) and create a space that felt warm, soft and cocooning – something that invited you in, rather than shocked the senses. This bathroom has very low ceilings and faces north-west, so one of the key considerations was how to balance the cooler light with a more inviting palette that still felt sophisticated.”

How did you select the colour palette for the space?
“The room’s natural light leans cool, especially in the winter months, which made me gravitate toward warmer neutrals. I used a technique I like to call ‘hue pairing’, a softer alternative to colour drenching that layers two closely related hues for depth and subtle contrast. Truffle grounds the space on the woodwork, while Canvas V on the walls and ceiling adds a light, enveloping warmth. It was about creating a cohesive and layered look that works harmoniously with the room’s quirks.”

What effect does the pairing of the closely related neutrals, Canvas V and Truffle, bring?
“This pairing brings both cohesion and depth. Rather than using a single colour throughout, this ‘hue pairing’ allows for variation without disruption. Canvas V softens and wraps the room, while Truffle adds structure and richness. The two shades work together to counteract the cooler light, warming up the space without overpowering it.”

Tell us about the other elements of the space, such as the beautiful floor tiles and lighting. What are your favourite parts of the scheme?
“One of my favourite elements is the lighting. Recently, we opted for candle sconces which are from a Swedish brand, and they are based on the design of 1890s wagon lanterns. They add a beautiful warm glow and a gentle nod to the past, all without electrical work.

The layered textiles also play a big role; woven baskets, linen mix curtains, and plenty of soft towels to bring in texture. The tiles bring a timeless feature and a little modernity, and of course, the low Georgian ceiling (while a bit of a mystery) gives the whole room a cosy, almost storybook charm. It’s like a little sanctuary – strange, snug, but full of character.”

Finally, can you share your top three tips for designing timeless interiors that exude warmth and character?
“1. Layer your tones: Instead of relying on a single colour, pair closely related hues to bring depth and warmth without visual chaos.
2. Embrace quirks: Character often lies in the imperfections or oddities of a space, so lean into them and let them tell a story.
3. Use texture with purpose: Natural materials like linen, wood and woven elements can soften a space and make it feel lived-in.”
