Soft neutrals are perfectly suited to bedroom spaces, where they promote rest and relaxation. Slate I is a versatile shade that sits comfortably in any interior setting. It provides an understated backdrop upon which to add interest with textural elements and accessories.

Discover how @dhowelldesigns used this warm off-white to establish a sense of calm and tranquillity in her son’s bedroom.

Tell us how you used Slate I alongside other elements for a soft and inviting bedroom scheme.

Slate I is a wonderful soft yet warm white that is lovely and light yet cosy at the same time in our south-facing room. There’s no blue or grey pigmentation, so naturally it’s on the warmer side.

Keeping a room pared back but producing a cosy feel is about adding textures in other finishes, but along the same tonal palette. This is easily achieved with flooring, rugs and soft furnishings. Lighting also plays a critical part in adding warmth.”

What is your best advice for creating neutral, understated interiors?

“My biggest tip is to find a colour that works on everything and paint walls, ceiling and woodwork in that one colour. Instantly a room feels bigger as the eye isn’t drawn to different colours. That said, where you wish to pick out architectural details such as cornicing or architraves, then drop down just one shade to that of the walls and ceilings. Theses layered whites are much softer and less sterile, but also work much nicer with colour and are a softer option for ceilings and woodwork."

Do you have any tips for choosing the perfect white shade?

“My advice when using whites is to pay attention to the undertones. I find whites with a grey undertone are a complete ‘no-no’ in north-facing rooms, as they appear very cold and give off a blue-grey appearance. Equally, in a south-facing room, whites with warmer under tones of yellow/reds can look too cream. Always try out a number of testers directly onto the wall in different parts of the room and assess them at different times to see how they look in different light.”

Will you use Paint & Paper Library in your upcoming projects?

“We are currently renovating our hallway, stairs and landings across four floors, and have decided to use Slate I everywhere in this space. It works perfect in all areas of light throughout the core of our home, and beautifully with the limestone flooring and sisal runner that we’re introducing. It’s quickly becoming a contender for our base colour throughout the property.”
