When designing her kitchen scheme, Hanna from @ourhebehome was searching for the perfect neutral palette that would offer warmth and accompany dark woodwork. The Sand Architectural Colours provided a selection of soft neutrals with different strengths of the same pigment, containing a touch of pink for added warmth.

Discover how Hanna selected shades from this palette to achieve an effortlessly harmonious kitchen scheme that incorporates walls, woodwork and cabinetry…

What Paint & Paper Library colours and finishes did you use in your kitchen scheme?

“I used a combination of shades from the Sand Architectural Colours in Architects’ Matt, Eggshell and Satinwood:

Coving and ceiling – Sand I Architects’ Matt
Walls – Sand II Architects’ Matt
Doors, architrave and windows – Sand II Architects’ Eggshell
Cabinets – Sand IV Architects’ Satinwood
Skirting – Sand I Architects’ Eggshell”

Tell us about your project. What kind of scheme did you want to achieve?

“It has been a few years since we had originally painted the kitchen and it was starting to look tired and well-loved, with the odd chip on the cabinetry. I had hoped to be more adventurous, but I kept being drawn back to soft, neutral visuals for inspiration. Though south facing, our kitchen doesn't get a huge amount of natural light during the day so keeping the overall colour scheme light and airy is what we know works well and eventually settled on.”

How did you end up choosing the Sand palette of neutrals?

“Despite looking at deeper tones to start with, I was constantly being drawn to the neutral palettes that Paper & Paper Library offer. I must admit that I sampled a fair few before settling on Sand, with the help of one of the lovely colour consultants who worked with me to understand the space, light and mood. Sand is the perfect array of warm neutrals, not too yellow or blue toned. We had also treated our worktop with a darker stain, so we were looking for something that complemented it and Sand does just that.”

The Architectural Colours allows you to use related tones on different elements to create a coordinated scheme. How did this make a difference?

“The concept of the Architectural Colours is absolute genius! For a novice or indecisive decorator, such as myself, it really helps in making the process easier and more enjoyable. You can select a scheme with the peace of mind that the colours will work together, all the hard work has been done for you!”

What do you look for when choosing a finish for kitchen cabinetry? What was your experience using the Paint & Paper Library self-priming Architects’ finishes?

“Personally, I love a subtle satin finish. It gives our kitchen a slight iridescence when the light passes through the room and ticks all the boxes for being a durable and hard-wearing finish. The perfect option for a busy family kitchen! Although the project was very labour intensive and took a lot longer than I had anticipated, working with the paint was a dream. It applied nicely, had great coverage, dried quickly and wasn't heavily scented as some paints can be.”

We love your effortless interior style and how you enhance neutral schemes with beautiful details and accessories. What are some of your best tips when it comes to interior design?

“My biggest tip that encompasses all aspects of creating a home is to have a slow approach. Take time in making decisions, this is especially important when it comes to selecting colour. For example, test it in various areas of the room and see how it responds to light at different times of the day. The majority of our home has a fairly neutral base, but I'm slowly bringing it to life through adding decor with warmer accent colours and natural textures. I try to avoid buying into or being led by trends. Of course, there may be aspects which are inspiring but for the most part, my focus is to create a home which is warm, welcoming and that reflects us as a family.”
