Situated in the idyllic location of the Queensberry Estate in the Dumfriesshire countryside, Dabton House was designed by architect William Atkinson in 1820, commissioned by the 5th Duke of Buccleuch. Following an extensive renovation project completed in 2023, this picturesque property has now been unveiled as an elegant private hire accommodation, featuring Paint & Paper Library colours throughout.

Apple Smiles II & Clay II

The interiors pay homage to the property’s historic provenance by complementing its period features with traditional fabrics, furnishings and accessories. In contrast, the vibrant palette of paint colours offers a more contemporary element, achieving a welcoming blend of country house elegance and modern style.

Constantia Blue & Masque

The main reception space embraces the resonant blue, Blue Gum, on every surface, including walls, skirtings, door architraves and the central fireplace. This liberal use of colour creates a cocooning effect, whilst the classic blue hue beautifully complements the gilded picture frames.

Colours such as Apple Smiles II, Constantia Blue and Chinese Emperor provide a strong backdrop to softly coloured furnishings and traditional dark wood furniture in the bedroom spaces. Constantia Blue is teamed with the complementary pale grey, Masque, on the woodwork and ceiling, while the yellow-green undertones in Clay II make it the perfect partner to Apple Smiles II.

A contemporary botanical wallpaper, Lighthouse Palm – Chelsea Green envelops the living space on all four walls, adding textural interest. In this verdant colourway, it provides a calm and uplifting, atmosphere reflective of the outdoors, whilst the playful palm tree motif injects an element of personality. The rich dark wood floors and burnt orange accents offer a touch of colour contrast to elevate the scheme.

The most contemporary use of colour features in one of the bedroom spaces, where Plaster V pairs with the contrasting accent shade, Beetlenut. Rich and exotic, Beetlenut is used to frame walls in Plaster V, on the cornice, skirting, door architrave and fireplace. Its vibrant red-orange hue brings instant impact, coordinating beautifully with the richly coloured artwork, wood and tiles in the space.
