The South Bank Mural with Many Hands Studio

Paint & Paper Library

Paint & Paper Library recently supplied paint to transform London’s South Bank with a contemporary, graphic mural from Many Hands Studio. The specialist art and design studio painted the mural using Architects’ Eggshell – a water-based paint that provides a durable low-sheen finish on interior and exterior surfaces.

Home to an array of celebrated arts venues, food markets and galleries, the South Bank is a vibrant cultural hub that lines the southside of the River Thames in London. Featuring the words ‘Loved locally, celebrated globally’, this new mural is located at 76 Southbank, beside the iconic concrete buildings of The Southbank Centre and National Theatre, whose distinctive brutalist architecture characterises this area of the city.

The mural was designed and created by Many Hands Studio, a London-based art and design studio that specialises in typography, pattern and illustration. For this mural, they have taken inspiration from the surrounding architecture to create a striking graphic design in bold orange and monochromatic tones. They used Paint & Paper Library colours, New Black, Fuji, Cotton III and Opus, to paint the design over a strongly contrasting, bright orange backdrop.

The exposed exterior setting required a robust paint finish that could withstand the elements. The ultra-durable, self-priming Architects’ finishes from Paint & Paper Library were ideal, providing the long-lasting durability usually expected from oil-based finishes, but with a quick-drying, low-odour, water-based paint that is easy to apply. Drying to an elegant low sheen of 10-20%, Architects’ Eggshell combines beauty with practicality, available in the complete palette of Paint & Paper Library colours.
